Since the beginning of human civilization, our bodies have had unique ways of preserving everything we eat. This happens because the body stores calories, nutrients, and other things in the event that meals are missed.
Back then, there wasn’t a name for the process of not eating every day, it was just a natural practice. Today we know that this process is called fasting. Fasting is defined as: going without food and/or water for a period of time.
They’re different reasons that people go through the process of fasting. Some examples: weight loss, natural healing, blood pressure management, to wean off of prescription and other medications, detox/cleanse the body, mental clarity, and spiritual reasons to name a few.
Using Water to Fast
One of the more popular fasting methods is called Water Fasting. When it comes to fasting with just water, it can be done for a period of time, usually 24 hours through a certain number of days. Christina, a writer for the veetravelingvegcannawriter blog, water fasts for 3 days at time.
It’s up to you and your body to determine the number of days. For a more medicinal water fasting experience, sweet plant Cannabis can be consumed during the water fast.
Cannabis and Water Fasting
When cannabis is consumed during a water fast, it helps supply the endocannabinoid system with additional cannabinoids and terpenes, which all contribute to the healing of the mind, body, and soul. I say additional because the human body naturally creates these already.
Just like the plant, which has an endocannabinoid system, so do humans and other mammals. The endocannabinoid system helps bind the receptors in your brain that transmit signals to the central nervous system and the rest of your body.
Water is essential to life and when consumed in the amounts necessary for our bodies, and even giving it a little more, means that the organs and cells in the body are at their best operation. When Cannabis goes in, the magic it works on the body is elevated.
Bad stuff out, healing powers from earth go in. Additionally, Cannabis can help with symptoms experienced during a water fast (more on symptoms below) There is a rule to water fasting with cannabis: NO EDIBLES and no solids of any kind. It’s best to consume cannabis during the water fast via: tinctures, vaping, and smoking- preferably Black Girl Magic OG.
Health and Body Changes from Water Fasting
There are some changes that happen within your body during the water fasting period, which can be beneficial. Generally, the popular changes are: weight loss due to little to no calorie intake, cellar replacement (that’s when the bad cells are replaced with good cells from the stem cells that are in the fat tissue), mental clarity due to better gut health (the body healing itself and resting from digesting solid foods), and new nerve pathways in the brain. Also, water fasting is known for bringing people close to nature, the essence of life.
But, there’s an opposition to everything we do, and water fasting is no exception. You will go through certain symptoms, such as: irritability because you’re not eating, sugar withdrawal which can feel like what addicts go through detoxing, and be more prone to headaches because of lack of sugars and salts.
In Closing
This has to be said, water fasting can be intense so, always consult a holistic doctor preferably, or a nutritionist. Fasting in general is usually associated with weight loss but my opinion is that humans should water fast for better overall health and happiness.
